Public Lectures

On July 18, 2013 I gave a lecture to the Wildlife Conservation Society history group at the Bronx Zoo. The audience was amazing and I got some fantastic feedback that will help me think about the way zoos and aquariums differ visually.

On June 16, 2013, I participated in Hidden City Philadelphia. "The Hidden City Philadelphia Festival celebrates the power of place through the imagination of contemporary artists, inspiring people to explore the city's history and imagine new futures for our urban landscape. Artists of diverse disciplines and media create site-specific work that illuminates abandoned, obscure, or inaccessible sites throughout the city." This year, Hidden City has 9 sites for visitors to explore, including the abandoned Kelly Natatorium. The Natatorium was built in the Philadelphia Waterworks after the closure of the Philadelphia Fairmount Aquarium in the 1950s.

I was delighted to be asked by Camp Little Hope, the art collective in charge of the Kelly Natatorium project, to speak about my research on the history of the Fairmount Aquarium. Visitors asked questions about the use of the space and shared their own stories of visiting the aquarium in the 1950s.

On September 21, 2011 I gave a talk about the early years of the Philadelphia Aquarium at the Fairmount Water Works. You can listen to the lecture and follow the slides here:
